great tuesday, everyone. this morning, growing anger at the irs. >> the president and republicans railing against the agency for targeting conservative groups. we are live with the very latest. breaking overnight a personal decision shared by the world. angelina jolie choosing a double mastectomy as a way to prevent cancer. her gripping message about the life changing surgery. fire and ice. extreme temperatures fanning flames in the west and melting mountains of ice. our reporter is there in minnesota. swimming with jaws. up close and personal with man eating sharks. good morning. we begin with anger at the irs. >> right now it's extremely rare when outrage from both sides of

the aisle but that's what we have. it's what's going on. the government looks into the most disliked agency and they start to feel the heat. abc's devin dwyer joins us with the latest from washington. good morning, devin. >> reporter: good morning, diana. good morning, john. that's right. when the targeting began three years ago, the irs was led by an appointee of george w. bush but republicans now say president obama deserves some of the blame too. this morning, the scandal involving the irs and tea party groups is growing. documents obtained by abc news show the unfair treatment of some conservatives extended beyond this cincinnati field office that was initially blamed. the acting irs commissioner also knew of the problem for at least a year, never telling congress. >> and you use the irs in this fashion, you're basically limiting free speech. and that's not good for any of us. >> reporter: the groups were trying to register as tax-exempt organizations. the irs was supposed to enforce the law with integrity and fairness to all not considering

political views but an irs watchdog found some got extra scrutiny including those with tea party in their names or criticize how the government is being run. >> they wanted very specific details concerning people that came to our meetings. people that spoke. >> how many e-mails did you send, what were they? >> it had a chiing effect on all of us. >> reporter: president obama first learned of the situation friday in the news calling a biased irs outrageous. >> i've got no patience with it. i will not tolerate it, and we will make sure that we find out exactly what happened on this. >> reporter: now, the irs has apologized saying the activity was limited to low level employees but so far no one has been disciplined, a fact that will likely take center stage when house republicans grill the acting irs chief on friday. diana. >> have to wait and see. devin dwyer, thank you. expect to hear some new outrage over the justice department's secret search of the associated press' phone

records. the ap reports that the government secretly obtained records from april and may of last year, those records detailed the incoming and outgoing calls of individual ap reporters as well as general office numbers much the justice department isn't saying why it sought the records. the ap has protested to attorney general eric holder calling the government's actions a mass ink and unprecedented intrusion. new details about ariel castro's past. just released records show police were called in six times in connection with violent incidents that involved castro including three alleged beatings of his wife, what remains unclear is whether any of those incidents could have led police to the three victims inside castro's house. he remains in jail where guards are checking on him every ten minutes. police in new orleans identified the suspect in that mother's day shooting which left 19 hurt. several people recognize the teenage suspect from surveillance video taken near the parade where shots were fired. police say the 19-year-old has a long list of arrests including

weapons violations. three shooting victims are still in the hospital. and hundreds of police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice were remembered last night in washington, d.c. in an annual tradition, the names of the fallen were added to the national law enforcement memorial wall. minnesota just hours away from becoming the 12th state to legalize same-sex marriage. it got final approval from lawmakers yesterday that triggered a spontaneous celebration by supporters in the state capital. the governor will sign it this afternoon and they can begin getting married in august. along the jersey shore a major recovery step. work crews will begin demolishing the roller coaster destroyed in that storm and wound up sitting in the atlantic ocean. a crane will be moved in and the coaster will be removed piece by piece. it will be gone by this weekend. it starts hours after britain's prince harry visits seaside heights traveling with governor

christie getting a firsthand look at the areas hit and will stop in a gaech community that sustained extensive damage, all of it 500 plus homes either damaged or completely destroyed in the storm. more pictures of that giant wall of ice that came crashing into waterfront homes in northern minnesota. that community will soon have a soggy mess as temperatures soar today. abc's ginger zee has the latest. >> it's really pushing in. >> reporter: creepy and crawling, people watch helplessly as the blob of ice comes straight for their homes. >> it just busted through a door over here. >> reporter: the towering ice is almost 20 feet high in spots. >> i'm standing on what looks like a giant paddle of snow but look as a take a step, it sounds like breaking glass. it was all ice pushed onshore from the lake behind me. it's called ice heaving and believe it or not it can be a sign of spring. here's how it happens. as temperatures warm and ice melts, high winds blow it from

mobile home park but crews finally managed to bring it under control. weather across the nation, strong storms a threat in minnesota, michigan and wisconsin with gusty winds and hail. cloudy with a few showers in the pacific northwest. >> temperatures, ten degrees cooler than usual in morning from new england all the way to virginia. a huge warm-up around the great lakes and the plains. and another day of scorching heat and southwest with phoenix and las vegas over and las vegas over 100 degrees. >> wow. still to come, a marriage made in fast food heaven, the two great foods that will be united for taco bell's latest breakfast. >> ooh. i can't wait for that one. also, ahead, consumers who shelled over their cash hoping to drop a few pounds by wearing skechers. not so much. they're getting a refund. angelina jolie announcing a bold and brave decision to try and reduce her risk of cancer.

all right. skechers is going to pay 40 million bucks to settle a class action suit about misleading ads. the company had claimed its toning footwear would help people lose weight and strengthen muscles. more than half a million joined the suit. they will each get about 80 bucks for each pair of shoes they purchased. maybe that mea culpa from jcpenney's is actually working. they apologized for recent unpopular changes and asked customers to come on back. well, apparently they are. the retail giant posted this new ad thanking customers for returning. deeper discounts have brought more into the stores and the stock price is up. all right, a georgia man claiming to have the secret recipe for coca-cola and he is trying to auction it off on ebay for 5 million bucks. cliff kluge insists that this is

the original much sought off coke formula dated in 1943. he found it in a box of letters and papers he recently purchased from an estate sale. coca-cola says that recipe for the real thing is actually safely tucked away in a vault in atlanta. wendy's plans to drop breakfast at most of its restaurants. well, the fast food chain apparent ly found competition from mcdonald's too much. some experts say breakfast eaters tend to be creatures of habit, and wendy's added the breakfast menu too late to compete. it will still serve the early meals in hundreds of locations where it was profitable. and speaking of breakfast how does waffle taco sound, john? >> pretty good. pretty good. >> well, that's what taco bell is testing in southern california. it actually looks pretty good. aha, covered with maple syrup. that's all you need filled with a sausage patty folded around scrambled eggs. now you lost me. no word on whether it'll move beyond the trend setting. >> i don't want to see the calories or fat. i just want to eat it. >> you think so? >> yeah.

texas could be slippery this afternoon. strong storms could make travel difficult in parts of michigan, wisconsin and also -- i said michigan -- >> you did, michigan, wisconsin and michigan. another great day for air travel. we don't have any delays at any of the major airports. now to that alarming news that broke overnight. angelina jolie going public after a very medical tough choice she made that might have actually wound up being a life saver down the road. she had a preventive double mastectomy she had a double mastectomy. >> the 37-year-old actress revealed in a "new york times" op-ed she underwent three months of surgical procedures to remove both breaths. her mother died of cancer at only 56. testing showed she had a 87% chance of contracting it herself and wanted to be proactive to reduce the risk. jolie wrote "the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy, but it is one i am very happy that i made. i can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer." and jolie also gushed about brad pitt calling him loving and

supportive. she said he was at the treatment center for every minute of her surgery and the experience has brought them even closer. jolie said she doesn't feel any less of a woman and telling her story so other women can benefit from it. >> you know what, i respect the heck out of that decision to go public and raise awareness for women. clearly, it's, you know, with someone of her stature doing this, there will be a lot of attention. her doctors said she had an 87% risk of breast cancer, a 50% chance of ovarian cancer. this is, of course, her family history. >> all reduced to less than 5%. so you know what, at the end of the day, first of all, it's reconstructive surgery so she even says in the op-ed she wanted it so nobody could tell the difference. her children couldn't tell the difference and they can't, so if the risks outweigh the rewards, and especially if you don't get it, then this is the way to go. >> yep. tough decision nonetheless but, yeah, we respect that decision. don't we? >> yeah, we do. and we're going to have more reaction to this news plus

medical experts will weigh in later on "gma." o.j. simpson could take the stand as early as today in a las vegas courtroom. the former football great trying to convince a judge that he deserves a new trial on the kidnapping and robbery convictions. it'll be the first time we've seen simpson testify. he did not take the stand in either of his two previous trials. fans, friends and patients are remembering dr. joyce brothers. brothers is perhaps the best-known psychologist. she died yesterday in new york. she was a pioneer in giving advice on tv and paved the way for dr. drew pinsky and others. she was also a longtime columnist and author. brothers was 85 years old. well, you may not have even noticed it, but the sun unleashed its most powerful flare of the year on mother's day. while earth was not hit with any of the radiation, there were disruptions to some radio frequencies and experts are warning there could be more trouble ahead for communication system and power grids. wow, isn't that beautiful to look at. >> so if you forgot to call your mom, blame it on the solar flare and communication. >> excellent.

but in the eastbound direction we still have the construction we had yesterday three lanes blocked until about 6:00 a.m. this morning on the lower deck headed along eastbound direction three lanes are blocked. in san francisco, we have one lane shut down until 5:00 a.m. for caltran work nobody 101 between 80 and mission street. >> thank you. breaking news in the south bay an overnight fire destroyed a beauty salon in san jose. firefighters tweeted this picture of the fire at the silk day spa and salon. crews responded to the fire at 2:00 this morning but were unable to save the building before the roof collapsed. no word on the cause of the huge fire but we will continue to gather information on what happened and bring you more later in the newscast. >> new details concerning an a list hollywood star going public with a very private health care

matter. angelina jolie is admitting she had a double mass mastectomy. >> she said it was a preventive measure, because she had a high risk. at the end of february she had already started the treatments a few weeks earlier on february 2. in the op-ed in the "new york times" she says jolie said because her mother battled cancer for 10 years she was tested and found out she carries gene. doctors said she had an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of getting ovarian cancer. after the procedure, her chance of developing best cancer has dropped to 5 percent. she feels empowered no less fell minute and her partner was by her side every ste
